I honestly suspect Gaddafi was actually deposed because he wasn't dealing with that huge chunk of Islamic state/Islamic brotherhood territory in south Libya along the Egyptian border. The brilliant American policy then decided to topple the Libyan government expecting to create a reason to step in and start working on it, instead things got really messy and the democrat party, who were micromanaging the military (and thus NATO) at the time got cold feet, basically making the problem even worse.
Who actually gives a fuck if Gaddafi was trying to set up a gold backed currency? Economics is rapidly becoming a non issue after 08, stop blaming the bankers. The real geopolitics is about security.
