Why is Howl such a divisive Ghibli movie?
Everyone I've talked to either thinks it's trash or one of Miyazaki's best, no in-between.

It's not very good compared to other things Miyazaki has done.
I'd say it's Ponyo-tier.
It's great, but I imagine much of the ire probably arises from the fact that the romantic subplot just doesn't mesh well with the rest of the film. I mean it's certainly the aspect that irks me the most
Ponyo is one of the Miyazaki's bests. Fuck off.
>Ponyo is one of the Miyazaki's bests
Maybe if you're 8 years old, as it was literally made for that age group.
I think people are harsh with it because it's a Ghibli movie. I think it's really average, kinda like Patema for example, but Patema doesn't get shat on on the same level because people didn't have high expectations for it.
the movie is garbage compared to the book, I don't know why Miyazaki had to take such a huge shit on Sophie when he claims to be a feminist
Go back to watch some edgy shonen for mature people like you.
The ending was too rushed, as are most endings of japanese animated films
People had no expectations after Eve no Jikan? How harsh.
>shonen
>mature
Do you understand how contradictory this is? I'm just saying Ponyo is for children, and does not have nearly the same amount of depth as Miyazaki's other stuff, it's not one of his bests by a long shot.
I didn't say "no expectations", just not the same level of expectations that one has for a Miyazaki movie.
yeah but Diana Wynne Jones one of those authors that no filmmaker could truly do justice because she is just that literary, it'd be like someone trying to adapt Philip Reeves' Mortal Engines series to anime
>tfw Peter Jackson is going to murder it like he did The Hobbit
Is he actually going to make that?
I don't really care about it all that much
I read the book first. The movie's like a schizo dream version of it. Wasn't that impressed but didn't really think it was terrible, either.
That's funny because I kind of think of it as mediocre. Lots of great visuals; weak story.
I think everything is great about it besides the story, its one of my favorite Ghibli soundtracks
>>tfw Peter Jackson is going to murder it like he did The Hobbit
Wait what? Shit he's actually following through.
I legitimately think it's one of the better Ghibli films with the caveat that it is a poor adaptation. But I can see people not liking it because the plot is not super focussed. It does feel like during the middle we lose our way for a bit.
It was fun.
Take that how you will.
Ponyo is literally Miyazaki's worst.
It never pretends to be deep. It tries to be a straight up children fantasy and excels at it.
the book is stupid shoujo shit and you know it
Myazaki did his best to adapt the damn thing and making it not sorely about a tsundere couple hurr durr
>the book is stupid shoujo shit
This sentence is retarded beyond belief. Stop using demographics as genres.
>making it not sorely about a tsundere couple hurr durr
You what? The book had much more happening than the movie, Miyazaki said fuck it to most of the plot and ditched the actual antagonist halfway through.
I agree. They are both among his very best.
he recently announced the start of pre-production, it's officially his next project
