In 2016 we got the best yaoi anime ever (Doukyuusei) and the best yuri manga ever (My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness). Hell they were so much more that you shouldn't even categorize them as yaoi/yuri. What went right?

Asumiko. Everything she makes is gold.

I couldn't get through it, it made me literally cringe. Although I do have to say the setting and scenery was very nice.

I hate that art style but it was cute. Compared to BL manga it's nothing special as there were a sea of simple one shots like this. But the more popular ones are the hard core rape/melodrama/drugs/abuse/Yakuza/Prostitutes ones so the simple stories never really shined.

What I would actually like is more series with fag protags but not actually be the focus of the show. Unless it's a comedy about a guy trying to build a harem and failing.

As a veteran /u/fag I think he's out of his mind if he thinks that

Doukyuusei was by no means anything special in regards to its manga.

It's a very good adaptation, and it's a very good anime, but as a manga it's really not better than a lot of stuff that's out there.

Off the top of my head, 銀のくつ since it was the best thing I read last year. There's tons of good BL right now.

That manga was garbage. She ends up with no one, pays to sleep around a bit, and there's zero resolution to the "story".

It's easily the best LGBT manga since Wandering Son.

There are tons of BL with good art now, but as far as plot goes it's still the same shit and the exceptions are still rare.

Doukyuusei was one of Asumiko's first manga, she was playing safe and wanted to do draw something cute and vanilla, the sequels are a lot better.

Plot was never the main focus of BL so it's fine. In relation to its main genre, romance, it's doing great.
I'll never understand why people are so desperate for plotBL.

I doubt it. There's only one chapter left (and it's going to be mostly about the girls) and Asakura and Subaru are still in denial. But at least we know that they are gonna end up together someday. Yurifags on the other hand will get a friendship status quo ending.
