Regardless, we need to remember that Indians have to deal with some pretty intense competition among each other back in India. The ones who can make it out to a better place, like what the Aussie implied, have the tendency to feel like they're hot shit (lol). Please note the word "tendency". I've still met my fair share of bro-tier Indian nationals.
Secondly, classism is still a very pronounced feature of Indian society. Sure, the caste system is officially not there anymore, but the attitude remains. People from societies like that tend to be very conscious of who they can feel superior to, and vice versa.
And while I've heard many stories of how many Indian men seem to think a little too highly of themselves as some sort of a natural trait, I think this attitude may be somewhat justified in this case since they've had a huge part to play in shaping the whole of Southeast Asia (not just Singapore) since hundreds of years ago.

The earliest acknowledged people to settle in Singapore are generally grouped under the Malay race. They're the ones who look Thai or Pinoy. And not surprising too, since they are genetically very similar. Also related are the indigenous Taiwanese and Vietnamese.
