Not pre-2000 exactly but I'm watching Boogiepop Phantom and can't understand what's going on half of the time.
what are some upcoming blu ray releases?
also glad rx came back for g gundam
Started Maison Ikoku. I guess this is the progenitor of all the "single desperate ronin with strange neighbors" anime out there.
I've been watching the 90s Ah My Goddess OVAs, and they're pretty fun.
>pre-2000s anime

Recently, I've re-watched ranma1/2 again.
The first time i did that was when I was 12. About 10 years ago.
I now understand why i have all the degenerate fetish i have.
I've been nostalgia-ing way too much tonight, it's making me depressed.
Stop projecting.
Rejoice!
I watched Macross: DYRL sometime ago and now I can't get the song out of my head. I didn't even like the movie, it was ok, but danm, Ai Oboeteru Imasuka is beautiful and I feel like crying everytime I hear it, yet I can't stop lisening

Mou hitoribochi ja nai~~
I've been watching Space Cobra recently. 8 episodes in and I'm kind of sick of the Royal sister's arc, but I'd say I'm enjoying it overall. first episode was easily the best
plan is to watch every single Lupin episode and most of the movies after this. I've only watched the dubbed episodes from season 2 and a few of the movies, so that'll be interesting. one of my favorites from when I was younger
how's Captain Harlock?
Have you see any other Macross before that? First time I saw DYRL I was kind of lost, but after getting to know Macross more, it easily became one of my top films.
Everything is better when you look back on it.
Harlock's fantastic. It might need a BD these days to compete with the other top shows of that era, especially to help out the sound. I don't know how any company ever pushed Harlock in the states without the 78 series. Maybe for Waga Seishun no Arcadia because that's a good origin, but the series explores exactly how Harlock operates and his core beliefs.
>how's Captain Harlock?
A classic.
woah...
I'm very close to finished RoV, like 3 episodes close. I really don't want it to end, that's probably why I put off finishing it for months.
You've got Utena and Onii-sama e... if you need that melodrama itch scratched.
Only watched DYRL, I felt kinda lost too and felt the film was kinda rushed but since its an shortern version of the original tv show I guess its ok. I think you can watch the movie just for the music and visuals but if you want the complete version of the story I think only the tv series would deliver a satisfying story.
Right now I'm watching Macross Plus and I plan to watch 7 afterwards but I have no interest in watching the mordern ones like Frontier and Delta
I've already seen Utena and am in the middle of watching Oniisama e too.
Watching SDF Macross gives you perspective and background on the characters. DYRL is a compressed version, but it's like watching the ultimate retelling, where you get to see the characters given slightly tweaked personalities.
A Girl in Gaea is the same thing, only comes out worse for wear unless you prefer a more emo approach. But I don't think any film gets the retelling aspect done as well and as fulfilling as DYRL manages.
watched the Patlabor OVAs and the first 2 movies. The movies were pretty damn good but the OVAs were desperately boring.
>the OVAs were desperately boring.
Shit taste. The OVAs were great especially this episode, the commentary made it even better.
I liked the episode with the bomb defusing and the start of the second half with the military occupation, the buildup of all that was excellent. But I can't tell what kind of series it was supposed to be. It wasn't too much of an action show, no character development, not much drama. The majority of it just felt like it was just watching people... do stuff.
There are a bunch of magical girl anime I'd be watching IF THEY HAD FUCKING SUBS.
Which ones, the Pierrot quartet?
I don't understand why you're watching everything except the original. "I can't find a torrent" and "it's too old" are not excuses.
Getting towards the end of the Patlabor TV series. It's definitely my favorite of the franchise.
Already watched DYRL. Although the tv show has a more fleshed out story, you can just watch the movie and get what all was about
Eh, not totally. I think the emotional investment is there once you finished the TV show, enhances the movie.
Recently finished Dirty Pair (all of it minus Flash), loved it. Gunsmith Cats was also really good. Been watching Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, not sure if I want to continue or not.
They aren't the same at all. You seem to be under the mistaken impression that DYRL is just a copy-paste of the series like the Gundam movies are. It's a companion piece to the original, not a replacement.
It's like reading the wikipedia page for a 36-episode series rather than actually watching it. Whatever floats your boat though.
Did you see the original Lodoss yet? The most I've seen of CotHK is the OP, like 50 times.
Since you liked Gunsmith Cats you should watch Riding Bean now
Well, can't say the movie made me want more SDF Macross, but I think now its worth a look. I was watching Plus just because Shinichiro Watanabe and Yoko Kano are involved, and planned to watch 7 afterwards just to see where all this goes. Can't say I'm a major Macross fan, but its been pretty ok so far, I understand why it was one of the most beloved franchises of otakkus back in the day
Persia, Emi and Yumi yes but also older series like Minky Momo and Majokko Meg.
I would like to watch all the old classics from the 60's and 70's too one day.
That's because they watched the series and it was capped off emotionally by DYRL. The love for DYRL goes beyond it just being any movie.
A lad has the looker for a belle
Since he ain't can confess, he is gifted by Heaven with the girl's candlestick number. Never minding the strange switchboard voice, he immediately calls her, and is in riot to find out that she is mad for him as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a funny face. After some detective work, he finds out that the canary he called is not the same as he got his crush on with. In fact, she aint no even exist in this universe at all. She is the lady's double from the afterlife, who has got all kissy-kissy with the big guy's own other self, who too is unaware of her oozing.
Adventures ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective crushes, MELODRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of PASSION.
It's not as bad as some people say it is
But why the fuck the made Akito in to Edge Mcedgelord?
A lot of those anime are either junk for kids, sports, or super robot. I'd wish to dig in harder to the 80s, checking out more TV series that I've missed.
No, I ended up finishing the Chronicles download first so I went with that. Might explain why I'm not interested, but oh well.
I'll take a look, thanks.
Should have started with the OVA. It's not like it's some amazing piece of writing, or animation, but it always looks good and it's full of waifus.
I'm a magical girl fanatic sooo...
Already seen Creamy Mami, Magical Project S, and numerous other old ones. In fact if it's been subbed I have very likely seen it.
Lodoss's OVA doesn't have much going for it besides good character designs and detailed lineart (at the expense of being actually animated most of the time).
The TV series has a fantastic Ashram, Spark isn't actually as bad of a character as his name and bright blue hair might lead you to believe, and he has a better party than Parn on top of that. The animation is low-budget TV, but it does have a lot of moments where some guest director or animator wanders in and improves the animation for a bit.
That being said you should watch the OVA first.
The spin-off Crystania movie and sequel OVA aren't bad either if you want more of Lodoss's brand of classic fantasy.
The OP/ED of this one is so nostalgic.
Been slowly slogging through Eva. It's difficult to be interested in something so uninteresting.
Considering just watching Rebuilds instead.
>Considering just watching Rebuilds instead.
If you don't like the good version of the story, what makes you think you'd like the crap version of it more?
Has a good chart come out of these threads yet? Haven't delved much. I'm just watching VOTOMS, Space Cobra, Dirty Pair, and Aim for the Ace.
>Read the first 3 chapters of Asatte Dansu
>Realized that my love life have been so shitty that I can't even enjoy romance manga/anime/movies/etc anymore
>Every chapter leaves a pain in my chest
Which is a problem, cause I really like the art style.
There's so much that it all depends on what you're looking for.
I have the old Sup Forums charts, so I suppose I can skim those later when I'm done with my current backlog. I guess it's always going to be limited anyway since fansub groups rarely work on older material.
Stay away from the Rebuilds
>the only subs for Future Cyber Formula (QTS) are full of grammar errors and typos
Basic stuff but I'm rewatching Ranma. I know the animation takes a dive during the middle and then comes back at the last seasons. But man, it's SO fucking good. It's funnier and much better looking than I remember.
youtube.com
Check out this a e s t h e t i c s.
Crystania was fucking abysmal.
And the only things good about the Lodoss TV series, aside from the OP, were the omake shorts at the end of each episode. Dubbed.
Finished rewatching Ashita no Joe 2 for the third time yesterday. Easily one of my favorite anime of all time. Though I'll never like the choice of music in the end of the TV series.
This, Bobby's in Deep, California Crisis, Megazone 23, and tons of others really set off that 80s nostalgia bomb.
Cipher the Video
Never even heard of Wataru until some guy made those mecha OP compilations, but it has the most nostalgia OP.
EVA.
So hard to explain but it has this quintessential 90's aesthetic that screams "it could have only been made in 90's" the same way Gunbuster could've been made only in 80's.
Space Battleship Yamato.
It's pretty good, S2 is definitely better so far I think.
Yeah I REMEMBER was definitely the better final song.
Rayearth. I'm on season 2, I enjoyed the first season very much. Solid characters all around.
What is that show like, seems it's gotten a full BD release recently and I'm always looking for cel anime in glorious BD.
It almost seems like a standard magical girl show, but it isn't. The slight villains of the week motif only exists to really flesh out the cast. There's also an rpg like nature to the storytelling, with the protagonists moving from point a to b, while leveling up if you will. The narrative seems almost basic, but the overall build up and payoff makes it worth it. There tends to be a shift in style for that light comedic antics once in a while. It's a gorgeous show with beautiful visuals.
>And the only things good about the Lodoss TV series, aside from the OP, were the omake shorts at the end of each episode.
Too bad the action choreography is absolute trash. Throwing a bunch of weird shit into the arena doesn't make the actual fight less dull either. Utena blocks for a minute then wins in one attack. Repeat twenty times. It's the weakest part of the show.
If you're gonna make the audience sit through 3-5 minutes of stock footage in the leadup to it you might as well bother to make a decent fight scene.
I'm watching Dunbine. Currently at episode 30.
Great start, great sense of scale of the conflict and one of the most crude Tomino shows, but he reuses too many of his favorite tropes and the middle parts is kinda getting repetitive.
The mecha design is beautiful.
I know what you mean, it's very subtle with certain things and will be somewhat clearer once you finish it, but I actually had to go and read what happened in the novels to connect most of the dots.
After finishing City Hunter recently, and spending few days trying to find something at least slightly as entertaining, I've started watching Dirty Pair, and so far I'm liking it.
I know it's a shallow complaint, but Mokkori antics threw me off the series. It was a bit too goofy, somehow CH kept from Lupin for some time because I used a broad brush.
I don't know, mokkori never bothered me, although somehow it looks more silly than in the manga, if that is possible.
Wanted to get an 80's art style fix, got 'literally me', the anime. An fun 70 minute ride.
I have been wanting to watch that, but need to clean up what I'm watching first. Already started on 2 Tomino shows, will have to finish Turn A Gundam before I start Dunbine.
Finished NausicaƤ yesterday. It was quite good. Felt like it was the same type of thing as Honneamise and Windaria.
I feel like Dunbine will also be similar, along with Turn A Gundam, that's why I need to finish those two before I start Dunbine.
I enjoyed Ocean Waves more than I think I should have.
I realize it's not Toriyamas best work although I really want to get into it however there's no English dub and don't want to wait for a total autist to do so.
Patlabor TV is an awful kids show though.
...
Nothing wrong with that, user.
Patlabor is supposed to be witty and funny with a dash of seriousness, not juvenile and stupid. The second Bud came on screen all hope was lost.
>I feel like Dunbine will also be similar
To Nausicaa? Not really.
Galaxy Express 999
I've enjoyed it so far but I also wish a lot less of the episodes revolved around kidnapping Tetsuro/Maetel/their passes.
Attached: best episode so far.
Ghosts want to be made happy to
I started the old Birdy OVAs. Decent so far.
gandalla subs when
mah nigga
Great series, but it should be kept in mind it is supposed to come as a complement to the novels, kinda like a spin off.
So yeah it's pretty hard to get anything without having read at least the first two novels.
Watching SDF Macross for the first time, and Bebop for the 4th time. What's the recommended order to watch the other Macross series in?
Damn, that's amazing. I was wondering what to listen to while cleaning, think I'm gonna go on an 80's bender now.
Where does all this insight of madness caused by astronomical sums of money come from to a mangaka
Pre-00s manga but whatever.
I've basically torrented all the basic/classic stuff. The others are are harder to find with seeds. Hopefully animebytes open up applications soon.
I watched Secret of Blue Water recently.
Ah, the nostalgia was so strong, even if it was the first time I watched it in jap.
They rarely make stuff like this anymore (I mean a story developed over more than 13 episodes).
I skipped the stupid island filler and that one where Jean writes a song. Enough to see that twice, ever.
Nah, Midnight Blues was the perfect pick. Not to mention that that entire scene had better direction in the series.
I'm currently watching The Big O. It's good and Dorothy is best girl.
I heard that the series has a really abrupt ending due to the third cour being cancelled. Is that true?
I'm watching Evangelion for the first time
Not so good so far
Evangelion, not so good.
Read the manga. That's the only way to enjoy this series in English, at least for now.
this order:
macross > macross dyrl > macross plus >macross frontier
after that watch whatever you want in whatever order
Bunp
Oh I remember watching this OVA. It's pretty interesting for the aesthetics alone, top tier animation. But the main girl is a literal unlikable slut to be honest.
