Having been on Sup Forums when it was airing I don't remember why anyone liked it besides "kyon is cool" and "I would totally act the way kyon is acting".
I think that was the appeal of the series, instead of having the MC afraid of the girls he was downright judgemental and misanthropic and that probably rang true with anons across time and space. Most anons like to mention the movie scene as their favorite part of the series where Kyon is being honest with himself that he actually enjoyed the supernatural stuff.
