I use Manjaro. Gnu/Linux is freedom.

Pretty sure the govt has people including things in the Linux kernel, too. They were caught doing it to BSD. Google and Intel commonly make driver inclusions to the kernel.

But that's wrong. It's more than possible to browse the web without government intervention.
Oh wait you probably need Facebook huh.

From what ive read, they dont have many options with Arch Linux.Ubuntu and Debian, yea they do. Its just as easy as Windows.

Wasnt there a thread where a highly ranked executive at ibm came here to tell us every pc has builtin malware hardware?
And the reason Steve Jobs 'died' was because he didnt want to give ((())) the same access?

They do, but what they don't have are written contracts with "linux" allowing them back doors. As that would be more or less impossible.
Obviously you can't 100% escape it, but you shouldn't leave your backdoor unlocked for them.

Possibilities are neither greater not lesser.
Anyway, modern hardware is made with forms of data collecting in mind.

You're talking about Intel CPUs. That's why we use old thinkpads.

> highly ranked executive at ibm
A larp
> every pc has builtin malware hardware
If you mean a backdoor, it is called Intel ME on intel CPUs and PSP on AMD CPUs.

I don't know. Linus is the sole person involved including every patch into Linux. Pretty easy to manipulate one person compared to an entire organization. Also, it's pretty easy to include innocuous code. Look at OpenSSL. Plenty of backdoors in that piece of shit and they did it by accident. The US govt have been using those for years and they're in the Snowden documents.

They're definitely lesser as they have to actually brute force their way in, rather than just saying "Hey Microsoft :^)"
The difference is that they're telemetry isn't automatically sending them everything you do as well.

You can just assume everything is monitored. I worked for Canadas largest DSL provider for years, very easy to track everything. Unless you literally build your own hardware software its all controlled.

i hope you realize every packet, be it behind seven proxies, deleted from a websites backlog or hidden by a vpn can, will and has been decrypted by someone whos much better with a computer than you will ever be
most of your hardware has backdoors in them for data to be funneled in and out without your consent
you dont dive into an open space and expect to be able to hide yourself with fog when the person hunting you has thermal vision

They can if they want to.
The main difference is that rather than having everything you do automatically sent to them, they have to actually request it.
Which isn't going to happen nless they know you're to something.

Friendly reminder if you use Linux you are overweight and creepy. Please, brush your teeth.

>open source isn't full of backdoors
retard.
>modern computer hardware isn't full of man-in-the-middle snooping stuff analyzing and interpreting your IO before it reaches you and your OS
faggot.

you're compromised if you use modern technology. monitoring devices that broadcast on cellular networks are small enough to be put into anything, from a couch to a toaster to a button on a pair of pants.

Are you referring to how the NSA helped make SELinux? It's an optional framework to lock down the abilities of some programs if you wish, so that if an exploit is found in that program, it can't be leveraged into complete system access.

The NSA doesn't just spy on people, they also help people be more secure. (The difficulty of course, is telling which is which and when.)

>Are you referring to how the NSA helped make SELinux?
No. The CIA had someone working for them on one of the BSD teams. It was huge news.

Not all of us have a CP folder OP

I don't want to have to type command line commands to do basic computer functions.

Interesting; I missed that news. Did they actually find something malicious that person did, or are they just worried that it exists somewhere in their patches?

>The gubmint can't see my CP cuz my l33t ArchLinux setup is so secure.

Stfu, you probably didn't configure shit right and have deliberately left off security features because they're a pain the ass to deal with. Also, that shit is disgusting, you should rot in hell pedo.

Very naive if you think all major countries arent monitored. Too much at stake user. They watch everything which goes through the pipelines.

>But that's wrong. It's more than possible to browse the web without government intervention.

summer child. you may not need a government, but some one will act like one sooner or later.

I don't care, all they're going to find is my collection of pictures of Nazi Germany, and my collection of various porn and reaction images.

I have no problem with government spying, in fact I have almost zero problems with anyone at all seeing what I'm doing, but if you use my personal activities as leverage or ammunition you can expect a hostile reaction.

Friendly Reminder

I never said that faggot
>Hurr only if you have something to hide
fuck off nu-pol
You don't know what you're talking about
Retard nu-pol just came of drinking age faggot
I didn't say either of those things Mr. IJustWannaArgue

ffs it's about minimizing damage and not just letting them walk all over you.
Obviously you'll never be able to 100% esape it in this day and age but you can damn well make it inconvenient on them.

Can someone do me a solid and shop the le feeling man in that 2nd panel

You will when they judge you on free speech. Which is happening across europe and pretty much the states.

Friendly reminder that if the three letter agencies want to spy on you, there is nothing you can do short of complete and total isolation from all technology that will even come close to stopping them. Even then it isn't a guarantee.

All you can do is try to remain as inconspicuous as possible and hope they don't take a interest in you.

Read the fucking thread before replying.
We already went over this twice.

You're what's wrong with society today.

reminder than if you don't know how to use this you're a god damn pleb

You're completely right OP, but I'd just like to add one small thing. Nothing important really, just something that's been bugging me lately. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

Then you should know there is no minimizing damage or making it inconvenient. The only thing stopping them is the sheer number of people on the internet making it unreasonable to completely investigate everyone, there are no steps you can take to do anything about it and taking those steps will actually make them notice you more than bumblefuck number #54344632 posting something dumb on twitter.

8.1 Embedded

Government tracking is much less of a concern than doxxing for anyone who isn't a terrorist or involved in something extremely non-kosher. Most people should focus on not giving away things that could lead to some antifa retard sperging out on them irl.

There's a lot FUD in here. Reading through the Snowden leaks and the CIA's exploit archives gives you a pretty good idea of nation state capabilities. For example, they have no easy answer to Tor and instead rely on exploiting the browser or server software to attempt deanonymization. They are bound by legal restrictions, which they have ways of bypassing (like getting a foreign ally to do it and then pass you the info) but it is still very complicated.

Even if there were backdoors in kernels, they would only use them in the very rarest of circumstances because revealing that capability to enemy nations would be a huge OPSEC fail. Plus, nation states would not buy browser and kernel exploits for hundreds of thousands of dollars (>$1mil for good phone exploits) if they had magic backdoor access to anything.

People often think of nation state hacking/spying as nation vs citizen, but this is mostly wrong. Nation state hacking is all nation vs nation and often has more to do with threatening certain capabilities than actually doing "damage" to networks or infrastructure.

t. sell exploits

If anyone's interested in hearing more, I'd happy to make some effortposts.

I have a feeling Sup Forums will play a role in muh russia hacking in the election. That dirty gook nigger moot who already data mined 2chan has datamined Sup Forums with his ukraine server bitcoin scripts Sup Forums is finding recently. The media is probably gonna turn around and straight up say Sup Forums a far right board on Sup Forums with their election memes are "proof" of russia meddling and gook nigger moot will come out and admit leaks in Sup Forums servers. Fucking chink nigger got greedy with "muh ad revenue" and decided to go deeper then filthy ads and try to set up Sup Forums users as part of his bitcoin operation. The backlash is gonna cause a huge hit in ad revenue and gook moot will wind up shutting down this site cause of inability to pay the bills.

What are your thoughts about the firmware / hardware by components manufacturers being backdoored / compromised? eg: all consumer routers, mobos, harddrives, etc

I was 17 one time too. You'll stop giving a shit in a few years.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

If you are really paranoid, put a filter / gateway between your network and the Internet.

And yet you still use backdoored commodity hardware to run it.

Nothing is beyond their reach.

This can happen (like that Chinese keyboard that was backdoored) but it is mostly about nations compromising supply chains of products that other nations use. For example, Apple is extremely paranoid about having its supply chain compromised by the Chinese (not enough to move their manufacturing out of China, but I know that their Global Security team is paranoid about it).

Another example of such activity is the NSA intercepting a core router being shipped to Syria and installing an implant before shipping it on. They did this because they were unable to hack the Syrian ISP they were targeting and this was an expensive and risky alternative.

In general, I would not trust anything from China (I have a dumb theory that Xiaomi stuff is so cheap for Australians because the Chinese state subsidizes it by placing backdoors in it to gain access to sensitive Aussie stuff.)

This activity also falls into the "last resort" category like kernel backdoors: revealing any compromised supply chains kills a lot of hard work and expense, so it will only be done rarely when there is no other option (there is almost always an easier option).

Always possible, but very expensive. Read about Stuxnet and what it took for that exploit to work.

I appreciate the correction sir, but I can't help but say that what you're refering to as GNU/Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux+systemd, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux featuring systemd. GNU/Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning bootstrapper made useful by the systemd init system.
Many computer users run systemd every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, System V, the init system which was widely used before, was replaced by systemd, and many of its users are not aware.
There really is a GNU/Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. systemd is the init system: designed to bootstrap the user space and to manage system processes after booting. The init system is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. GNU/Linux is normally used in combination with the systemd init system: the whole system is basically systemd with GNU and Linux added, or GNU plus Linux featuring systemd. All the so-called GNU/Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux/systemd!

Good luck! I'm running quikmenu on a 486!
