That sucks. I can only imagine how many friendships have been killed by the hyper politicization of everything in the past couple years. If you really want to maintain a friendship with him, maybe you should try to emphasize the importance of mature political discussion and let him know you're entitled to your own opinion and are willing to defend it in debate. Respectful debates between educated and open minded people can be an incredibly rewarding thing for all parties involved.

The discourse started because he mentioned late night talk show hosts, and I brought up the fact that Jimmy Kimmel used to host The Man Show, how it was a show about tits and beer, all that. On top of it my professor wasn't a teacher, he was a producer teaching at a community college.

He can operate the gear and help students learn the software, no doubt. This is arguably more important anyway, But unless he is teaching them about the math behind the scene on these signal processors or synthesizers, he isn't on par with a PhD in physics.
