I never really noticed her abilities to be honest. As for the Neuroi, I guess they must be some sort of sentient (slow repro rate) force because they keep fighting conventionally and the witches seem to attack them like a regular army. They aren't treated like the space monsters that we all think they are. To be honest I still don't quite know what Neuroi are or where they came from, they have that Muvluv Beta feel to them

From the people I've talked to, the toned down fanservice seems to be a major sticking point.
The writing also seems to be a common complaint, but I can never get anyone to explain that point in further detail.
I think they did a much better job with the main character in Brave Witches. Yoshika and Hikari were both shooting for a similar angle, but we never really see Yoshika struggle very much with having to learn from scratch.
I also thought it was refreshing to see the regular military actually helping out and doing something.

I think it's fine, might be a bit of a bummer if you only wanted to see the 502nd without Hikari and her sister. The series played it safe and just stuck to the same formula but that's good enough for me honestly, I liked the characters enough to not give a fuck about it.

Hikari was a better MC for an MC focused show.
But the witches franchise always seemed like a large cast focused show.

By focusing so hard on Hikari's struggles and improvement they neglected the rest of the cast which was my main issue with BW.

While SW managed to have fun episodes exploring the big cast over its course BW felt like it was more focused on Hikari and neglected everyone else.

Not really.
It was basically Hikari, Nipa, Nao, and some other witches.
Even though almost every witch got their own episode they remained bland and uninteresting.
The show was completely devoid of those little funny things that are needed to make characters feel alive.

Things like Erica teasing Trude and details like her messy room appearing over and over again.
Things like Lucchini hunting oppai, like Yoshika staring at boobs at random moments, like Eila teasing Perrine.
Characters that interact with each other in the background and come to live just like that, characters with their strengths and weaknesses, their quirks, and how all those play together to create living breathing squad.

For some reason the writers have forgotten how to do this and just completely avoided it leading to Brave Witches being dull, serious, and mostly boring.
That's especially bad because those characters with their quirks had already been established in twitter stories but the writers chose to even ignore THAT.
No hugbunny, no mention of the relationship between Sasha and Nao, barely any moments between Sasha and Nipa, Georgette, who was that again, oh so funny Waltrud being the lesbian seductress and nothing else, but Edytha hitting her everytime will surely be great comedy, right? Right?

At least the MC was not bad.
