U.S. health officials on Tuesday approved the nation's first gene therapy for an inherited disease, a treatment that improves the sight of patients with a rare form of blindness. It marks another major advance for the emerging field of genetic medicine.
Patients with the condition generally start losing their sight before 18, almost always progressing to total blindness. The defective gene that causes the disease can be passed down for generations undetected before suddenly appearing when a child inherits a copy from both parents. Only a few thousand people in the U.S. are thought to have the condition.
Luxturna is delivered via two injections — one for each eye — that replace the defective gene that prevents the retina, tissue at the back of the eye, from converting light into electronic signals sent to the brain.
"One of the best things I've ever seen since surgery are the stars. I never knew that they were little dots that twinkled," said Mistie Lovelace of Kentucky, one of several patients who urged the FDA to approve the therapy at a public hearing in October.

Even the head psychiatrist at John Hopkins has said there is no gay gene and one wont ever be found because it doesnt exist. He's studied it for 40 years, has dealt and administered sex change operations, but has discontinued that practice. Could be that those with less pleasure seeking behaviour have more self-control and together with society's pressure against being gay simply never act up on it or hide their sexual orientation. THAT would be the most interesting question for me to understand the biology behind it. So you may have a gay genotype but depending on your lifestyle OR other genes you will develop a gay phenotype or not... because being gay usually destroys your reproductive success. The genes would quickly be lost then from the genepool (there must also be some situational advantage for 'gay genes' as it looks like they are positively selected for in general).

Look at some European countries like Denmark that have high acceptable of same-sex couples and Denmark has one of the longest histories of acceptance all the way since before WW2. They still have the same problems with gays that other countries have. It's not an acceptance or coping issue by the homosexual, its just who they are - degenerate. Good luck on your research.

The biggest issue is gay marriage hasn't been around long enough to definitively compare gay couples who are already married when they had kids (to the same sex) to straight couples who are married. The Christian anti-gay studies almost exclusively look at broken homes where the family started as heterosexually married and then divorce and coming out happened for at least one partner.

Makes me wonder whether there is a general difference in behaviour on a population level there. Ah well, most likely too complicated to nail down on single factors. sounds like a possible positive selection mechanism but I do not think that increased female fecundity solely explains the effects in men. Men may on average spread their genes further (they do not invest that much energy directly into reproduction in comparison to a female) so on a population level an advantage in women might still be lost if the disadvantage for male reproduction is drastic enough.
