Honestly what this user said. Many places in Africa would be fucked if the West stopped giving food aid to them, and in the long run, foreign food aid does the complete opposite of empowering them. It reminds me of an article I read about a rural community in one of the recently-former warzones in Africa where the primary farmer for the community was at risk of losing his farm because no one bought any of his produce. The local population's attitude was 'why pay him for food, when we can get free food from foreign aid?'. This is even a problem in more stable and populous areas, it's easier to get the massive bags of rice and beans for free, rather than paying for locally-grown food that will most likely be below the quality of the free food.
