Radiation can only be detected either at short range or by it's effects on things that were within short range, so once it's gone you wouldn't be able to find it again. When we detect nuclear weapons in other countries we look for seismic activity of launches and tests, radio chatter and all the infrastructure needed to move an enormous weapon around. Warheads are small enough to stick in the boot of a car so you probably wouldn't notice.
