It was never a real subculture. Record labels saw the appeal of Marilyn Manson who was a exaggeration of the grunge guys 5 or 6 years earlier and created a bunch of cookie cutter teen oriented bands. Once MTV stopped pushing bands like Avenged Sevenfold, AFI and Fall Out Boy, it just faded away because it wasn't cool anymore- as if it ever was to begin with.

Everyone kind of went their own way. A lot of the real hardcore people went into the Industrial/Goth scene, other people who were more bandwagon people went into the indie world and most of casuals just moved onto the Daft Punk molly club-shit which was the next one.

There wasn't much in the scene other teen angst. So, there is little wonder why there is not much sentimentality for it.

I remember how popular emos were in 2006. They hung out at the mall, going to Hot Topic, Border's Bookstore and the arcade. The 2000s really were a happy and prosperous time. So happy and prosperous, that it became fashionable to "appear to be depressed." Anime and manga were huge back then- so big that you even had a bunch of "Ameri-manga" coming out. Emo was partially influenced by the anime craze.

Then the Great Recession hit. And fashion just kind of became "bleh" after that. People didn't have any money to spend on clothes anymore other than Wal-Mart, Target, Big Box stores, and thrift shops. That's where the hipster and "lumbersexual" fashions came out of. Cheap things you could buy at Wal-Mart and faded clothes at thrift shops. Things like flannel plaid shirts, ratty faded T-shirts, and jeans.

2017 is the year of the retail apocalypse. And that means fashion is going to become even worse than the Great Recession as stores close.

Well they were around the same time goth and punk made a come back. Just a blend between the two with the dark clothing (goths) and the flashy colors (punks). The trend died out because the people following it got older like all trends.

Emo kids wore hollister, kids wearing hollister started stretching and dying their hair. I fell out of it all for a while, but I'd say the trend with the closest resemblance of community would be pop punk and tumblr. That is like emo and Myspace for me now.
