Most of what Westerner's think of North Korea is definitely propaganda from our governments. I don't believe most NK's have the same standard of living as we do though. It's a peasant society with a standard of living similar to Maoist China.

NK used to fall under the protection of the Russian nuclear umbrella. Once that fell apart, they began their own program. The US has been pushing for regime change in the country for decades now. A nuclear deterrent is the only thing that can prevent them from being invaded.
