Assange is already dead, there's no real denying that. I know it's hard to accept but you just have to at this point unless concrete proof comes out otherwise. Wikileaks is dead now too, most of its members in prison/dead or their families and loved ones being held hostage against them. So using what happened as a reference, this is probably what went down:

We know that in 2016, many of Assange's associates began to die. John Hones and Michael Ratner. These were a start, and could have been carried out by Clintons, intelligence agencies etc. The reason for suspecting this is because they both stand to gain: Clinton does this to help prevent her campaign from being damaged. And the intelligence agencies do not want to be in the spotlight, so they prefer to keep their operations discrete. Furthermore, if Clinton asks for this to be done, and she wins, she can return the favor for the US intelligence agencies to do as they please.

Seth Rich is also included in the mix. He has been leaking documents for a long while. Remember, Wikileaks doesn't release any of Seth Rich's documents at this point. And once it was determined that it was him, he was shot and killed. It is possible that Michael Ratner may have revealed this information if he was under duress and had loved ones ("I will harm your family if you don't tell me who the leaker is"). It is also possible that Seth Rich was foolish enough to entrust someone with what he was doing, only for that person to snitch.

Wikileaks suspected that Clinton et. al. was behind this attack, so they put out $20k bounty for actual information to confirm their beliefs. In the mean time, they slowly release the documents, which include Podesta emails. As the election nears, Kerry wants to put pressure on Ecuador to stop Assange from publishing Clinton documents, because the Podesta emails are pretty damaging. Knowing this, Assange released the SHA-256 keys and changes timestamps to 1984 before his internet was cut off.

The moment his internet was cutoff IS the moment we assume that Wikileaks and Assange is compromised.

Assange is potentially poisoned by some vegan sandwich, and this was when there was large presence of police vans every where. Subreddit moderators are replaced, airport is cleared to remove Assange for interrogation OR to cause confusion as to his location, and information/threads about Assange are deleted. Assange is discretely able to communicate to the public that Wikileaks and Assange is compromised with the misspelled tweets. The massive DDOS screws up any deadman's switch that Assange had in store and more Wikileaks associates die.

At this point, Wikileaks is definitely compromised. Either Assange is out of the country and there is a body double, or more likely, Assange is giving a forced speech at the threat of his family's or loved one's life. In the mean time, the Podesta emails now really pick up steam and Trump wins. While the intelligence agencies wanted Clinton to win, they realized that at this point it would be futile to flip the narrative, as evidenced by "Russia collusion" stories parroted by the media. So instead, Trump won.

But after he won, most people would die down because "they made sure the most corrupt candidate did not get elected". Furthermore, they could have misinformation spread about fake happenings with Flynn et. al. to distract the media and people. This means that they can pull whatever moves they want after the election and control the narrative at the same time. It's a pretty smart move on their part.

More proof of compromised Wikileaks is in the Vault 7 leaks: there was a malware that affect unix based computers when opened. Furthermore, insurance files released now don't match the hash that Assange released before being compromised.
