More people fighting over the same jobs make jobs worth less as workers are valued less.

Equal rights to work between men and women; With equal rights for women to work just as men have had, the workforce is even further expanded. This means that not only do you have yet more labour going for jobs that were previously only for men, but you also have special interest groups fighting for discrimination of men to further women. They claim that it isn't discrimination, but when companies are forced to hire according to equality requirements rather than raw output of work/efficiency, they lose out.

Age; People are living longer. Houses aren't being sold to young families or new starters as quickly as they were before. The prices rise as both population increases and people live for longer, holding onto their assets.

Globalisation; Rather than just looking for natives, companies are looking across the entire globe for a workforce. This can be good for the companies output, or can be just to cut costs. Either way, natives lose out.

End result? Those who had it best have already taken their slice of the pie. Those who were in line to have it best will no longer get all of the benefits their mothers and fathers had.

Oh, I didn't have the space to add it in anyway, but I also forgot other factors like where money goes. In the past, there were less options on what to spend your money on and spending money was done as a physical act; or at the very least, dealt with directly via cheque or in a bank doing a wire transfer that required signatures.
Spending money in today's world is quicker, easier and more tempting with many, many more items available. Not to forget the social status of items like iPhones and the prevalence of social media encouraging the idea that if you don't hold a certain level of social status, you're worthless - thus people flock to social status items and spend money on things that they wouldn't or couldn't have in the past. Instead of houses and cars, its spent on phones, computers and whatever else.

As long as you have, let's say, 300 dollars or more you should be able to get an account with no fees unless you need services like free cashier's checks on demand.

I don't know about in Texas, but in most states the minimum level of insurance, which pays if you hurt someone or damage their property (but doesn't actually cover damage to your own car) doesn't vary much on the car you dive (after all, it doesn't cover the car, so why would it?)

got his first job at a finance firm for 67K with very good benefits
after two years at the company, they gave him a 10% raise and a 5K xmas bonus

Here's three reasons, but there are many more.

1) Wages have stagnated for the last 50 years. Despite a huge increase in productivity, the average wage today has virtually the same purchasing power as the average wage in the 1960s.

2) The availability of good jobs has shrunk enormously. Where simply finishing school was once sufficient for a comfortable standard of living in our parents' day, today many employers require college degrees and often experience ontop of that, so millennials are often lumbered with five or even six figure debts from the start.

3) Owning your own home has become much less attainable. For the last 50 years or so, property prices have risen much faster than wages. In the UK in 1950s, the average house price was around £2000 - equivalent to around £43,000 today. The average house price in 2017 is £225,000. In other words, property prices have increased more than five-fold, whilst wages have remained roughly the same.
