German has some very counterintuitive stuff that you may only pick up properly when you use it constantly in everyday life. Linguistically the genders are funny as they go way back to the proto-Indoeuropean origins of our language. The masculine form was for animate thinfs while the neuter was for inanimate objects. The feminine was for groups of things (like a group of people) originally. In German you may still find these rules (eg. masculine 'DER Mann', the man but feminine 'DIE Männer', the men)
