All you need is basic knowledge to identify if something is a verb/noun/adjective. The rest is just checking the word in dictionary and construing some sort of sentence out of it.

You don't *have* to be super-polite, you know. You ought to know how textbooks exaggerate the significance of 'politeness' in any language. If you bring the stuff from textbooks directly into true conversation, it will always stilted and unnatural. If you made a Japanese friend in order to help yourself learn the language, went to lunch with them, and said something like "watakushi ni, kocchi wa umai na tabemasu-mono de gozasu", they'd look at you like you were fucking insane.
