Go take martial arts classes. Knowing how to react in a fight is more important than having a weapon if you don't know how to use it.
A lifetime of street fights taught me that if you MUST pull a weapon and it isn't a show stopper like gun, it should be the craziest, most ridiculous thing you can find. Pulling out a pocket knife will only draw them into the fight, whereas beating the shit out of them with your umbrella will cause them to run away. Imagine them telling their friends "yeah the dude had a knife" vs "naw I got this bruise when he hit me with his umbrella".

Wrench is a good weapon, because not only does it have weight it also has edges. It's also somewhat concealable. A claw hammer of course is the classic choice, but not as flat as a wrench and a little bulky. Also a wrench doesn't tip people off like a claw hammer does.

What matters most it target acquisition and weapon hand choice. When fighting with "pick-up" or improvised weapons. Simply put the weapon in the hand best suited for that weapon. If you fight "orthodox style. Your left hand is for the quick jabs while your right hand is for power blows.
If you have a screwdriver as a weapon you should wield it in your "jab" hand while you thrust and poke with it. If you have a mallet wield it in your power hand.
Then you pick your targets. Left thrusting jabs to the face and body with the screwdriver, where stab wounds matter most. Right handed power hits to the head, shoulders, and arms with the mallet where a broken bone can kill or seriously diminish the ability of your enemy to fight back.
