it would depend entirely on the scale of the targeting.
if it's one guy with a rifle taking potshots. the media would frame it as proof of the racist evil right and would turn the poor dead journalist(s) into martyrs. movies about their noble lives and tragic deaths would still be getting made 50 years from now. each and every public school child would be forced to stand for a moment of silence. it would still be a headline 4 presidential elections from now.
if it is a coordinated and well planned campaign carried out by professional killers throughout the country, it's a whole other story. have a few car bombs go off at the ever-growing number of memorial services, and the media would buckle.
