The "gainax ending" meme is more of a recent thing I guess.

The original Eva ending is absolutely amazing. It's filled with raw emotion and truly shows what Evangelion was all about. End Of Evangelion is fantastic as well though, and you can watch EoE without 25/26. You can't watch 25/26 without EoE unless you don't want any narrative conclusion.
