Guys, why are so many shopping malls going down, and what can we do to save them? Fucking hits me right in the feels, loved going to the mall as a kid and i dont wanna see them disappear, the very idea of shopping malls going away would have been unthinkable even 10 years ago
Also my personal observation has been that the very high scale end malls are still doing great, while the middle class ones are the most threatened

Can relate to that. Lots of malls that I've went to in my childhood here are dying out. Most are closing due to competition though. There are probably just three or four that seem to be popular enough to be running for the long run.
But even now it looks like several businesses are bound to fail in this country soon. Lots of shops are closing down, though certain enterprises seem to remain as cash cows that keep on giving.

Malls in my area seem to be doing ok so far, I think the long cold winters help keep traffic up but with all the muzzies we are importing, welfare rates skyrocketing, wages staying low while cost of living explodes, I am not sure we will not be facing the same problems as the US in 10 years or so.

Whats the point of going to a shopping mall, stand in lines and have to look for the things you want when you can order online with a couple of clicks in your own home? Even McDonalds now deliver to your house in many locations in the UK and elsewhere.
As technology becomes more advanced and innovation continues and if other businesses and industries don't adapt then they will simply become useless or shut down - it's just supply and demand really.

The truth is that malls are designed to keep you stuck inside, distracted, and constantly on the move. People, busy as they are, do not like that. Add on the travel expenses in time and vehicle operations cost and it's just a burden.
The retailers that do well are the try-before-buy kind of vendors. They now occupy the outlets instead of a giant mall complex.
Online retailers in comparison are like paradise. You can comparison shop, evaluate the quality of a product (to a degree), and make the purchase from anywhere, anytime. It also helps that the quality of our products sold here are just good enough to buy on sight with few, if any problems. It seems that anyone with the means to spend responsibly work far too much to even spare the time for mall shopping and those who can spare the time are usually leveraging a lot of debt, which isn't a sustainable business model.
Malls are a relic and their time may come soon.

I usually buy a slip-resistant work shoe or hiking shoes from a discount outlet and blow through 200, pavement-screeching miles in no time. There's still tread marks from years back where I ran to class. Maybe that's why I balk at buying expensive shoes.
Why people spend upwards of over $400 for a pair of compound and fabric (that's never worn) is beyond me.
I like malls also, but actually shopping or spending at them became prohibitive. As a teenager in a week I could go in and hang out, maybe buy a pair of jeans at sears, a cassette tape at the music store and see a movie with friends all on doing a little work after school and/or on the weekends. As time went by even as an adult working full time it started to become too much except for going to the big outlet malls, but they are an hour away. Heck I have maybe been to three theater movies in the last five years, the only thing they became good for was a cheap massage, and a haircut at the older mall, but now that has been converted to an upscale one, and I haven't been back but a couple times to walk through and see what they did.
Not to mention dealing with the management is a nightmare for anyone who has a store or shop. I had a friend who had a small business in a mall, they were ridiculous, like multiple times worse than a homeowners association.

So, basically the way it used to be. When I was a teenager every mall had at least a small arcade, there was always a salon where you could get an affordable haircut, and not just the over overpriced ones they seem to only have now, plus at least one restaurant with an outside entrance for after hours, and some even had a gym. Where I lived for a short time in Leafland, the malls had a standard department store (e.g. Walmart) and a grocery store attached, some even had the liquor with an outside entrance, and the stores were generally more affordable. Another way would be to expand the real estate with upper floors for office space, but yeah, it would take some diversifying to get me back.
In some office buildings you have internal atriums like a mall would have. No reason you cannot use the smaller shops fronts as offices for almost anything, while you can also use the former department store space for storage or larger operations

Shopping malls are a pathology. There's no economic justification for shopping malls. There's literally no reason why you should have furniture, dairy, butcher, florist, chemist in one place. Those are all such different specialisations that they should stay in separate shops
