Sowell argues that the black ghetto culture, which is claimed to be "authentic black culture", is actually a highly dysfunctional white southern redneck culture which existed during the antebellum South. This culture came, in turn, from the "Cracker culture" of the North Britons and Scots-Irish who migrated from the generally lawless border regions of Britain.

Instead of trying to figure out what it's supposed to be used for, that fork has become all sorts of things: a hair ornament, a weapon, a sacred object, a tiny shovel or whatever else they could come up with, but not an eating utensil.

One cold man Sowell is, he doesn't play in that book. He breaks it down saying that blacks are viewed as mascots for liberals to view in jest. He also states that the reason blacks have the mentality of killing someone over a pair of sneakers and shit like that is because of the southern gentlemen taking the gloves off the hands and slapping someone tradition. He even cited that there was a period in time that if someone where to disrespect another man that they would not bring them before court in any challenge of combat that resulted in death.
He has another good book that explains why blacks have no excuse, I believe it race and culture and he slams blacks in much greater detail. He cites the same "middleman" and how Asians and Jews dominate because they know how to utilize the communities they have been placed in. In his black rednecks white liberals book and goes into future detail breaking down how one culture that is dominated will pick up the other values of that culture. So if the antebellum south was filled with white niggers like scots they too would bleed off cultural values into the black race.

One thing that I do not agree with him on is his idea that IQ is something that is done through the surrounding culture vs the race of the individual. He believes that blacks suffer that lower IQ due to being around scots and lower europeans during the days of slavery. Yet according to Richard Lynn and the works of the Bell Curve that even twins of the same genetic make up and race had the same IQ despite being adopted by two different couples in two different poverty areas.
They also embraced black American culture thanks to hip-hop. Just so you understand, hip-hop was always a black nationalist/separatist movement. "We gotta fight da powa" and all that shit.
It also doesn't get mentioned enough that in antebellum America slaves saw themselves as above the poor, white trash immigrants (particularly Irish) who were treated like absolute shit. At least a slave was worth something, and the better ones were rather expensive, equivalent to the price of a nice car today. Black slaves looked down on these poor whites.
By associating with poor whites for hundreds of years, black people gradually lost their native culture and adopted that of the poor whites around them. I'm not saying that native African culture is something to be proud of (they haven't invented or created shit), but this is just the truth. Another issue is they've been taught lies about their history since the 1960s - how oppressed they were and so on - when in reality whites gave them everything. Literature, medicine, writing, infrastructure, education, etc. The descendants of African slaves in America are the wealthiest group of blacks in the world; they could not have done this on their own.
