I don't know what to expect from episode 13, but I hope it doesn't drive a wedge between Akko and Diana. Heck, I'm hoping the opposite happens and that through their competition they learn to understand each other and secretly become friends. They could still have their plot-related conflict in the second cour and it would make the stakes higher if they were friends, I think.

2. They needed 3 people a team and were clearly going to do something with her in the past but scrapped it. Evidence of that one of with her holding a gun. So maybe we'll see something similar in nature in the TV series.
3. Coming up with a more interesting character would have draw that attention away from the actual main character.

Not only she can't have a proper rivalry with Akko, but they can't even have any proper interaction as they are concerned by such different things. Akko wants to win some stupid contest while Diana is getting ready to save magic.

They can't even work together in plot-relevant episodes, since every time Akko revives a Word with the Shiny Rod is basically a personal trial that she has to overcome. If Diana was with her, she would solve any situation with her plot-breaking powers and Akko wouldn't revive shit.
