Indonesian TV censorship: cartoons cut, athletes blurred as conservative Islam asserts itself and broadcasters fear sanctions
Kissing scenes in Shaun the Sheep, swimsuits in Doraemon, even a female athlete on CNN – Indonesian TV censors are in overdrive, and internet streaming could be next. Some parents, though, welcome the oversight
>In 2015, Global TV cut several fight scenes from the Japanese animated showDragon Ballfor violating Article 17, which is intended to limit violent content, especially on children’s programmes. A few months later, a scene from the cartoonSpongeBob SquarePantsfeaturing the character Sandy the squirrel was shown with her body blurred because she was wearing a bikini. An episode of popular animated Japanese cartoonDoraemonwas also censored because one of the female characters was wearing a swimsuit.
>“They blur [scenes] without looking at the context. For example, a swimmer in a swimsuit. That is an insult to our common sense. It’s misguided,” she says, referring to a 2016 case in which CNN Indonesia blurred the body of a female athlete who was competing in National Sports Week.
Do other Indonesian TV networks follow suit? Is that censorship on par with Iran or Saudi Arabia? Happy New Year Indonanons.

the problem is that a lot of people view reality through the lens of the quran, which is irresponsible
the quran is essentially a literature, and the hadith is also a literature, and a common feature of any literature and also language is the inherent uncertainty about the boundaries of the meaning of words
that means when interacting with the world, religion is an unstable map, religion works well until a certain limit where its usefulness begins to diminish
for example, you would not use quran to diagnose health conditions, you would use medicine. you would not use quran to govern society - especially one with diverse cultures, you would use concepts in political science
there should be no fundamental conflict with the quran when it comes down to this, the quran essentially tells us what is reality, and science is basically a relfection of reality
any disagreements is attributtable for the quran being a literature
