I was doing some historical reading yesterday and came across this gem.
While the other major civilization centers of the planet, Middle-East, India and China, were booming experiencing growth in their culture and commerce, Europeans were shitting their beds. And this didn't just last 100 years or something. It lasted 800 years. This means that Europe was in the dark longer than it has been in the light.
Essentially, after the Roman Empire fell, Europe completely became unhinged. In fact, Europe became so much of an amnesiac continent, that it relied on the collected knowledge from the Middle-East to learn of its great past. The Arabs held on to the great works of Aristotle and Galen and it was through the libraries in the Middle-East and Spain, which was under Islamic rule at the time, that Europe began to turn the corner into what became known as the Renaissance.
