I have to admit that any sort of trans stuff in GitS-verse is really (and needs to be portrayed in a movie as really) different from anything in present day precisely because people adopt all sorts of bodies. It's not even a pure human thing, you see a number of times in the series where folks have adopted flat out 100% non-human bodies (can't remember the name of that box one, was it the "Jameson" or something like that? supposed to be some super old type). All the current angst about it should be gone in a world with cyberbrains being pretty mature technology and common even for little children.
