Testing a better wire antenna for my radio. My G5RV isn't up in the tree yet and the random wire I put up was junk, so I built an HF loop that seems better. Picking up Radio Havana like it's a local FM station.

The ladderline is cut to resonate it and impedance match the 50 ohm feed, BUT! you need to have 75 feet of the coax (I'll be keeping extra looped behind the desk) and I would highly recommend a 1:1 Current Choke ($30 from MFJ). The True Tune G5RV on Ebay is the BEST you're going to find ready-made ($100) and it comes with all the ladder line and coax for that price. (much cheaper than building your own). The ant also needs to be at least 30 feet off the ground in the center to radiate properly.

I got ya. If a 9:1 Unun isn't out of the question for you, look at a CHA-EMCOMM design to build or buy. It it will be more compact to carry, forgiving with height, but does require a counterpoise or lots of ground wires (looks like an octopus orgy) but is a great field antenna.

Oh, and if you're better at math than I am and can determine the right length to cut Nitinol (its velocity factor is significantly different than steel or aluminum) for an Open J-Pole, you can have a full size Open J-Pole that you can roll up and stick in a backpack pocket. If I ever get the math right and can afford to prototype it, I might market them for SAR teams and such.

As soon as I have my G5RV in the air and my SDR panadapter wired to my computer I'm *Thinking* about allowing Sup Forums to monitor it from my computer through a website I know when I'm around. The sound will likely be crystal clear.
I should be able to set it up so we can listen to something else like Brother Stair and VFO (monitor) HFGCS so the radio will switch over when it gets a signal.

I cannot imagine a life without hockey. Growing up, my dad and I never really got along, but we ALWAYS had our time together watching hockey... He made time and was always around when "Our Team" was playing.
He had his first stroke just before our team won their first Cup since the 60s. I took him into his dive bar to watch the winning game (that game was pretty much a given) in a wheelchair and a bunch of old-timers remembered him and we had a great time.
He's still alive (thankfully) and I take care of him and my mother who always calls me Esa (her brother's name).
I just wish I had a day where I could meet someone who rekindled my spirit, if just for a moment.
