It has a mesmerising veneer and an astonishingly rich culture. It also has high racial homogeneity which is in itself a rarity in the modern world. Its youth are dejected and this does not bode well for its future.

Japan has problems like any country, but they're one of the few truly homogeneous cultures left. Their history is very interesting, as well as their culture. I just wished they hadn't attacked us so we didn't have to bomb them until they were consumerist perverts and soulless business men. States = different countries in the US. love it. adorable salarymans, electronicists, bureaucrats, ad people, hardhats. if you live for your craft, it probably doesn't get better than nippon. there's much more to it than lolis and sushi. i've never been to japan, but i worked with japanese nerds a lot. much better experience than with French or british.

what i found interesting is that japanese people honestly appreciate any effort, no matter how modest, to speak their language, even if you totally suck at it.

this is in stark contrast to the French, for example.
