We know that the US government under O was funding, arming, and training the "rebels" in the Syrian Civil War and we know for a fact they were aware of the very high rate of defection to ISIS, but they didn't care because it still served their goal of toppling Assad. It's also no secret what the original purpose of Al-Qaeda was, so why would you assume something different is going on here?
