The soviets own head of propaganda (((Illya Ehrenburg))) initially stated that jews were "steamed" to death in showers. This was then changed to jews being gassed to death with carbon dioxide - that gas we all exhale. After being caught out again, the lie was changed once more to zyklon b, a pesticide found in large quantities in some camps.

But why would anyone ever use gas, instead of bayonets or bullets or famine, for mass extermination? Why would they feed them and house them and build hospitals and similar for them at extreme expenses while at war? Why not use the regular methods for extermination like the Soviet Union such as famine, forced death marches (this happened in Germany a bit, but only in the very last stages in the war while Germany was trying to move people around), forced relocation with death following, direct murders, gulags, etc.? Holodomor, the Great Purge, the Red Terror, etc.? Germany's camps are similar to the camps that the Americans housed Japanese and Japanese-Americans in as well as the camps that the British housed Jews in that they didn't want to go to British Palestine.
Also, haven't the official story changed somewhat recently from cyanide/Zyklon B to carbon monoxide? I don't recall hearing anything about engine exhaust gas or carbon monoxide regarding the Holocaust when I was a child, only cyanide and Zyklon B, but these days I hear about it all the time. But of course, this may be me that is being off.

I don't know if you noticed but the Nazis were irrational actors in the war as a result of their ideology. What I mean by this is they would often allow political or ideological motives to sabotage their plans. Take Operation Barbarossa for instance, the Nazis would've had much better success presenting themselves as liberators from Bolshevik oppression instead of waging a war of extermination. Same deal with their views of quantum physics, condemning it as Jewish Science
