MST resolves first, destroying the trap card, but it doesn't negate the activation of the trap's effect, so it still goes through. It does work against spells and traps that need to remain on the field for their effect to apply though.

MST's effect does activate first, but it only destroys, it does not negate. If it negated the activation of the trap, then the trap wouldn't be able to use its effect. But the trap's effect isn't negated by destruction, so it still works. I'm sure someone else can explain this to you better than I can though.

Not really, MST is already too good without a negate effect. There aren't many cards as old as it is that still see play (or saw play until Twin Twisters came out).

That's just the tip of the iceberg unfortunately. If you ever play with someone who is really into the game, they will make you follow every card rule to the letter. "You only get this effect if this monster is removed while acting as a material for an XYZ monster, not destroyed while acting as a material for an XYZ monster." "You only activate this effect if this monster is RETURNED to the graveyard, but you SENT it, so you don't get the effect." Stuff like that really killed my enthusiasm for the game.
