If civil war broke out between a right-wing rebellion and a left-wing US government, the Pentagon has found that 50% of the armed forces will immediately defect to the rebellion, and another 25% will fight the government from within. If you try to ban guns, you will have to kill us all. Seeing as we have the guns, ammo, and most of the military on our side, you can attempt to take our guns at your own peril. A government that attempts to disarm its people only has one reason to do so: it fears how the population will react when it imposes unpopular policies on them against the consent of the governed.

The government would also have to deal with sympathisers within the military, defectors, and generals and officers who go rogue and maybe convince their battalion, regiments, divisions, etc to go along with them along with the governor's who still command their national guard units. It's not as simple as the president deciding, "hey fuck rights, I'm going to take away freedom of speech and anyone who disagrees faces death squads for political cartoons." The government still very much exists due to the consent of the people. Soldiers don't just wake up and suddenly lose the love they have for the people they are ordered to kill and the rights they swore to defend.
