He was an arab nationalist who nationalized oil fields and do some social reforms. The west hated him for oil and because he was actually doing a good job and muslims hate him because of his social policies. The fact that he wanted to unite the north african countries (Bedouin cultures) so they could fight off the imperialists etc was feared and you could say that his modernistic views of islam was deemed heretical at the least (leading to a revolt of the fundamentalistic muslim brotherhood).
America had reasons to hate him, powerhouse Saudi Arabia had reasons to hate him, muslims in general hated him. Him staying in power for that long is surprising enough.
