It just seems like geopolitcal common sense that a German empire couldn't dominate Europe at Weimar size, it had to be highly populated and so people wouldn't have to live like rats in small cubes it would had to stretch from at least Netherlands to USSR. He fucked up by trusting the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, trusting the commies and trusting Stalin when he turned his back to knock out Britain and France. But then he didn't have much other choice. It was a choice of playing white and making the first move or playing black and hoping he could counter.
Also he was dying. He found out he had a heart condition in early 1941 so this may have influenced his thinking. It's a miracle he survived into 1945.

Hitler basically did not hate slavs, he and his party just viewed them as non-direct Europeans, which had too much influence from outside contributors such as the Mongols and Tartars and therefore inferior to pure Aryan Germanic or Nordic Europeans, who had no racial admixture.
The whole intent with the push east was to take over lands occupied by slavic peoples and Germanise them.
There had always been large populations of German settlers in those areas, and so it wasn't outside of established National Socialist ideology to take land from a lesser race, while taking the already established elements of a Germanic population and bringing them into the greater Reich.
The SS was also involved heavily in programs of racial purification and Germanisation.

That's not quite true, the narrative of "Hitler defended Europe against Communism" is older than that, going back to the Cold War when the US tried to promote the common ideology idea with the rather quickly re-armed and battle-ready West Germany.
