I don't know where I implied this, and I'm aware Japan doesn't care about them that much. But I have seen many anime that do reference things like the witch burnings and other stuff, so it's not like they're completely unaware of what has been done in the churchs name. I'm simply saying that in addition to them seeing it as cool and mysterious, there are many events which make it very easy to paint the church as villains. It's not like some random rebellion against an establishment for the sake of being edgy either because the church isn't as big in Japan as it is in the west. There is no need for you to be upset.

Then you could dislike just about any society. The catholic church isn't more evil than the Chinese or the Muslims, you just know more about our own shortcomings.

At its best it's a place that allows a gathering of people to share in a belief of bettering themselves. That's kind of the conclusion anyone who thinks about it is going to come to, if they think about it for long enough without resorting to mental gymnastic to justify certain ones. I simply stated why it's easy to paint them as villains. And, as always, people like you get all upset because it offends you to see that. I think the whole helping other people aspect of the church is very good, I never said the church as a whole was evil. I just think a large part of it is very easy to make into a villain for a story. Yeah, Japan does it because they think it looks cool, but you seem to be trying to trivialize their knowledge of "bad" things that parts of the church did in the past, for some reason. I have seen them referenced in anime many times, so I don;t know why you're so adamant to deny that the Japanese have any knowledge of them at all.
Maybe I worded it wrong, I was just trying to say that it's not hard to make the church into a villain for the sake of a story or looking cool. And there's a lot of people who seem to be unduly upset and offended by the fact that the church is portrayed in a bad light in a lot of anime. Everyone and everything gets shittalked, why should the church be any different?
