So I finally got to watching pic (not really a fan of harem stuff, but I seem to be missing a lot of references to it) and got to the 'find a familiar episode'.
Why, exactly, was a slime a bad choice for a familiar? It restrained or blinded people for well over a minute in addition to removing whatever meager defenses they had and stopped them from using magic.
I'm pretty sure I could beat up a naked, blindfolded, and tied up dude in less than a minute.
Slime can't really hand out fliers, which is a primary task. Plus it freaks out every other member of the peerage.
Plus it goes into tentacle territory, which despite most of the OVAs, isn't what DxD does best.
Familiars have no importance in this series the only use they have is handing out fliers and being body doubles for when the cast can't attend school themselves.
Because Issei gets a much much cooler familiar later on

Basically, to go back to the harem thing; a lot of the things that usually happen in harem anime I don't like. However, I don't have a strict problem with harems themselves so if they show up in an otherwise okay show I don't mind.
I have that issue with a fair bit of genres, actually; I don't mind the underlying concept, its just that some of the most popular things to do in them piss me off.

More or less. I actually haven't seen any new harem anime (new as in made past 07), so if this is where the genre has gone I think I'll be okay with other new harem anime.
The fanservice is way excessive though. Honestly a little annoying.

In my experience, excessively fanservicey works tend to inspire less porn. When something is already softcore porn, there's less of an incentive for fans to make their own.

The way I figure it, DxD is an example of a story done well. Yes it uses elements we've seen MANY times before, but it reminds us why they became overused in the first place.
Ise is about the only thing that has unique character traits in that the hero declares a desire for a harem from pretty much the start. (From what I've seen for myself, that's the only thing against the grain.) Between that and his obsession with oppai we don't waste time setting up the fanservice the way other harems have to.

I usually go the opposite direction and prefer it when the MC doesn't even realize everyone wants his dick and friendzones them all, but unapologetic harem chaser is a good choice too.

It seemed to fit the post. Pic related is actually my 1st effort (and it shows I know.) Still love it when others repost it.
The only problem I've had with DxD over the last arc is that Issei got turned into even more of a special snowflake. I know there's no other way around it especially because of power levels but it still rubs me the wrong way considering how it's been handled in the genre.
At least the story is straightforward enough to not get out of hand and crash and burn. The characters, comedy and action is also good.

Also worth mentioning is the find a familiar ep comes from a short story found in vol 8. Essentially there wasn't enough material in vol 2 for a full 6 eps so they went to other published material.

Fair point about the special snowflake angle, but it IS used to advance the plot as the series advances. Basically it's a shonen MC trope that we only discovered in ep 6.
It will be used to uncover many different and unexpected layers of depth in time. Even if everyone that isn't Ise has a better idea of what he has than he does.

But it's true. Vali, Cao Cao, Sirzechs are too, but no the others. Azazel, Shiva and Crom Cruach didn't suddenly become powerful as fuck in the span of one year or were necessarily born with mutations.
Further than having the boosted gear, Issei gets a body made by two of the three strongest beings in the universe and can gradually use said power. It's handled better than it sounds but there's no point in beating around the bush with it.

I'm going to advise taking your time to enjoy the series as it unfolds with perhaps 1 BIG exception. Season 3 tried to cram in 50% more LN material plus anime original content and more than a few were disappointed with the result. Reading vols 5,6, and 7 could well be a better choice than/or in addition to S3.

In retrospect Cao Cao fits as Issei's rival much more than Vali.
