I was involved in the team of writers responsible for the new season of Roseanne, set to air in March, but ABC gave us absolutely no freedom when it came to the show's content. We were specifically told that the show must take an anti-Trump standing, painting Trump's supporters as a group of incompetent morons and racists.
When we complained about this decision, we were informed that these topics weren't a choice and that if we didn't include these references, our jobs would be terminated and we could face blacklisting. It quickly became apparent that almost everyone at ABC involved with the show was completely against these decisions, even most of the actors.
We were informed that the scripts were entirely changed, enforcing the notion that you have to be a racist, gun slinging redneck to support Trump. However, ABC's lawyers ended up stepping in and cutting a number of scenes from the scripts, including one where a character shows off a Klan outfit and states that he purchased it at Trump Tower, and another scene where a character mentions his gun before stating "I'd really like to try it out when I see those Nation of Islam folks near my house."
The cuts were made because they were seen as potentially offensive towards minorities despite being included by the higher ups at ABC.
You can pretty much sum up one scene in the first episode as the following:
>Roseanne thanks god during grace for "making America great again"
>all the other characters visibly cringe and make angry faces
>Laurie Metcalf's immediately replies "You're looking very fit, apparently all that weight you lost was the good Roseanne"
>[audience laff]
>Rossane attempts to justify her support for Trump by stating how she almost lost her house under the previous administration
>Laurie Metcalf replies "Have you seen the news, now things are worse"
>"Not on the real news"
>[Audience laff]
>"Oh look Dan. Russian"
>[Audience Laff]
Those are pretty much direct quotes from the first episode.
