Lord of the Rings was wildly popular because it presents a universe with objective moral standards which reflect the Catholic (or pagan-Christian) values which form the foundation of our civilization. In that universe good triumphs over evil and even the more atheistic and secular sections of our population have absorbed enough of our old cultural values to feel the joy of that triumph.
Modern films are too often just "look the gay guy got accepted by his community! BE HAPPY" and it just doesn't resonate.
