This guy is so overrated. He has exactly one voice and he even used the same style and intonation for almost all of his roles. I don't get why people seem to like him so much.

Because it's a sexy voice. And acting isn't all about range, it's also about emotional depth.

Directors know that yet they still cast him on roles. He brings magic to the show.

Cause he is an actual avid gamer and is an authentic otaku. I have yet to see any other seiyuu bragging about having a waifu in Love Plus.

Who cares about male seiyuu?

He isn't the only one but sometimes it's about being recognisable. The big names are paid for their specific voice.

He can imitate Norio Wakamoto, Ishizuka Unshou, Furuya Tooru, Shiozawa Kaneto, Morikubo Shoutarou and many other people so well that the "one voice" claim just isn't valid. Even in regular voice his acting is "good enough" (ie. great) that the characters that need to be distinct are so. Complaining about his Gintoki resembling his Hoshi is kind of pointless because the original characters themselves are so similar; Chamber is a completely different type of character, and he sounds completely different.

When it comes to his real strength as an actor, nobody can deny his comedic performance (eg. Gintoki, Hoshi, ) and monologues that completely steals your attention (eg. Kyon, Hidenori). Add to that subjecive things like his natural low voice tone and IRL personality and it's no wonder he's been able to survive in the industry for almost twenty years.

Also, he has said himself on Gargantia's web radio that he doesn't try to sound different in his roles because he realized people like his voice as it is. Some non-anime production are more honest about their castings; in one of them the director told him he really wanted to have Gintoki as his narrator and in another one they specificly asked for a Chamber-like voice.

If anyone wants citations, sources, or more information, I'll be watching this thread and share my knowledge as a huge Sugita-fag.

Sugita usually uses a pretty over-the-top voice in his roles, but he has a pretty mellow voice in Persona 5. I wouldn't really say he has just one voice. More like that he uses that one voice too much.

He uses his normal voice because that's what directors want from him. What matters is that he has emotional range with his very unique voice and he does.

Famous seiyuus either don't need to have another job, or their jobs are related to the entertainment industry, such as radio talk shows
