That is not really correct. Norwegians sold the farm, so they could get a bigger one in the states, and seamen and sailors have had an easy time emigrating since the viking era.
Why be a poor fisherman/farmer combo, when especially your seamanship were in great demand from all the merchant fleets?
Norwegians had the highest life expectancy in world in the 18 century, something that don't fit with being piss poor. The poor in France did not have shoes, but if you did not have clothes and a house, you froze to death in the winter in Norway, and that also helped with the poor people problem.

This is completely false. Norway has had a reasonably good gdp per capita since the 1800s.
Our fishing industry, wood industry, boat building and a large trading merchant fleet was our source of income before oil, as well as plundering.
