Is this the best genre?
There aren't many like it.
>Not mentioning Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou
Even if you were fishing for recommendations I feel like I have to point this out.
Kabu no Isaki kinda counts too
+ Mystery elements
+ Eerie/uncomfy stuff
It was pretty high up there, but now you really have the best genre.
I'm not sure if Haibane fits setting-wise though, but the mood is spot on for a melancholic sol.
what's that pic from? image search is giving me random anime wallpapers and I hope it's not the case
It's not from anything it's just a random picture.
I like slice of unusual life a lot like Magical Pokaan and Ika Musume. Kemono Friends fits that too.
Admit it, you just like animal girls.
>no mention of actual, literal pure Kino
>SoL for edgelords
>good
Not mentioning Non Non Biyori
How can you guys miss this?
Behind all that CGDCT stuff it shows Japan's demographic and even economic disaster in a village that used to have more people before the economic bubble that burst in 1989!
This. It shows five students of different ages going to a broken down school with only one classroom and teacher. They live in a town with a population of less than 40. It's post apocalyptic done right without being edgy.
I liked the vampire and robo girl more than Liru.
>Kemono friends
Should I watch this?
Yes.
>edge xddd
This is still the worst buzzword of them all
Vampire still has strong animal motif going on.
No.
Maybe
Nah it's shit
I don't know.
Can you repeat the question?
Does Gravedigger Loli count? I loved that shit and the calm, melancholic atmosphere it had but it was kinda plot heavy for a comfy series.
>post apocalyptic
It's true that NNB kind of fits into "Slice of Decay", but let's not get carried away there.
It was a great three episode series.
You probably should, if you can leave your hatred of 3DCG at the door and give the show a genuine chance to grow on you almost everyone I have seen do this has found it a rewarding experience that has surprised them greatly in just how good it is.
YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME NOW
I think it's possible to construct a "mood" category which would include haibane and NNB, and a "structure" category which strictly enforces being post-apolocalyptic. Even then Kino no Tabi is hard to decide on.
Having similar mood feels like the more natural category.
It might not be strictly SoL but it gives the same vibes and has a similar setting, so I'd say yes.
I wish there was a more defined genre of fiction with this setting because I really love it and it's hard to explain to people. The whole post-apocalyptic melancholy vibe where things are sort of fine even though they shouldn't be is absolutely amazing, especially paired with a semi-fantasy setting.
Something else that kind of fits the description is the Illusionary World scenes from Clannad.
>"mood" category which would include haibane and NNB
How?
"These feel like (part of) a run-down world. Things are visibly old, decrepit, falling apart. But the people seem quite optimistic, or at least not miserable." That's the core idea anyway.
What do you mean with NNB because if we talk about the same thing I don't really see how it fits that describiton.
...
It's an adventure oriented show, but Future Boy Conan's post apocalyptic setting is very calm, almost on the verge of tranquil. It's just Fucking Businessmen that ruin everything.
AND YOU'RE NOT SO BIG
Damn, I forgot about this. That's the kind of girl that always punches me right in the heart.
Does Haibane Renmei count as this?
MONO NO AWARE IS THE BEST GENRE
Another good mangaka for this is Igarashi Daisuke
forgot pic
Life is unfair...
Three years and I am still mad at the ending.
Is this the new Madoka clone?
...
this idea really overlaps by a large chunk with mono no aware.
I miss coco!
I think the second arc was cool too, the dead city or whatever it was.
Pretty sure Haibane was the first anime of this ilk. Cutesy moments subverted by the grimdarkess lurking in the shadows, and even though everything seems happy and comfy enough you can't really shake off this feeling of unease.
There was basically nothing grimdark about Haibane, you are probably just misinterpreting the purgatory vibes.
Granted it's a bit background-y.
We need more entries in the genre so we can find out where the boundaries are.
>Pretty sure Haibane was the first anime of this ilk.
I'm very disappointed, user.
That's some ugly looking tree
...
Can't believe nobody posted this yet.
Give it 4 episodes
>"I don't know what grimdark is"
Got it.
Kemono no aware
Why don't you go ahead and share with the whole class your brilliant insights which will surely settle the long-standing and frequently acrimonious debate over how to define the term, user?
Do you really need to be spoonfed understanding for such a simple term?
The only spoonfeeding here will be my dick into your dumb ass.
>getting angry when your ignorance is pointed out
You could have asked politely and I would have explained it to, instead now you're ignorant AND upset.
Yes. I am exactly as stupid as you think I am. Please show how much smarter, wiser and better (not to mention more attractive) you are by explaining your ideas. Ideally using small words.
>Cutesy moments subverted by the grimdarkess lurking in the shadows
what
Did you know there's this thing called the internet? And on the internet there's this thing called google? And if you type a word you don't understand into it, it will tell you what that word means? You should get it a try sometime, instead of acting like some poor boo-hoo victim whose ignorance over basic terminology means we're somehow obligated to hold your hand and explain things to you.
Google can't tell me what YOU use a word to mean, user. We can't understand why we disagree if we can't explain what we each mean by a term.
I use the word to mean the same thing everyone with a basic grasp of the English language uses it to mean. You seem to be the only one who has trouble understanding such a very simple term.
I do not know why you are even trying to discuss anything with that user, it is clear he does not understand.
Why are you avoiding giving a definition this much, user? Do you have something to loose?
You know you're digging yourself in deeper each time you get mad about not knowing what that word means, right? Why do you keep doubling down on yourself like this?
I think he's a linguistic prescriptivist. I want to get him to admit it so I can laugh at him.
>Why are you avoiding giving a definition this much, user?
Because you asked a question that's too stupid to be worthy of a serious answer. It's like asking "What's the difference between tragedy and comedy?" Either you know, or you have an IQ of 50. There's no need to explain what "grimdark" means any more than there's a need to explain grass is green, and doing so is just humoring a willful retard.
I'm not even the user you were originally replying to.
Nah, nothing grimdark about Haibane at all. From Reki's nihilistic/fatalistic personality surfacing along with Rakka's loss of innocence to the setting reeking of hypocritical stoicism that traded knowledge for "happiness".
The same hollow happiness that feels undeserved for people filled with guilt and poisoned by emptiness even though they supposedly have everything to be "happy".
way to kill an interesting thread
Lmao at this brainlets ass post, as expected from a Sup Forums anime board
But more importantly, look at it like this. user says Haibane Renmei has a grimdark background tone (I'd mostly disagree with that, but whatever). Other user says it's not grimdark at all. I give an example of a point where it's pretty fucking grimdark! user says "nuh uh, that doesn't count."
Suppose instead of asking for the definition, I gave another example (kind of tricky since I already used the best one, but imagine for now). user says AGAIN "no! not what grimdark means! you must be stupid!" The goalposts can continue moving forever.
There's no need to explain what google says grimdark means. But I don't want to know what google says, I want to know what you mean when you say "that doesn't count as grimdark." If you weren't allowed to say "grimdark" or "edgy" or any simple synonyms, what would the sentence look like? What would you say instead? Then we can actually address the question rather than just playing the "you're stupid for not already agreeing with me" game.
If what you'd mean is EXACTLY what google says, why don't you like the example? It is, in fact, excessively violent and unpleasant.
"Dude I was just asking a question, I'm not that guy"
In the anonymous world, when you bear the banner of an idiot, you become that idiot. This isn't new shit.
I want reddit to leave
>Haibane Renmei is excessively violent and unpleasant
Why waste so many words just for a retarded shitpost?
"Edge" isn't a solidly defined word though. Everyone uses it differently. It's pretty much a synonym for "thing I don't like". I wouldn't say any of the works mentioned in the thread are edgy at all. user was clearly asking how you define the word but you keep avoiding the question. You're making this conversation essentially really childish.
Normally you'd use term "grimdark" to describe something else than a series with just overall melancholic feeling. No one would have any beef with you if you said series like Berserk is "grimdark" but goddamn Haibane Renmei?
See Do you just not understand the difference between "is thing" and "contains thing"? Is that the only reason for this whole stupid argument? For the love of fuck.
>"Edge" isn't a solidly defined word though. Everyone uses it differently. It's pretty much a synonym for "thing I don't like".
1. We aren't talking about the word "edge", we're talking about the word "grimdark"
2. But that's wrong, it very clearly has a meaning, and inappropriately using it to just mean "thing I don't like" is just ignorant and betrays a lack of ability to properly interpret a work or express yourself about it
>We're talking about the word "grimdark"
My mistake, brain short circuited apparently.
>it very clearly has a meaning
Even the thread cannot reach a consensus on what it means. Why won't you just define it so that you wouldn't come off as just an asshat avoiding the discussion? I really cannot understand something this simple.
>Even the thread cannot reach a consensus on what it means
The thread does not need to reach a consensus, the word has a meaning regardless of whether one person chooses to willfully ignore it.
>anything remotely unpleasant is grimdark
You've honestly got me at a loss, I'm not sure how to argue with such idiocy. I mean I'd really have to break things down and explain them to you on the level of a child if that's the argument you're going with.
>The thread
>implying it's more than 2 retards samefagging
>Instead of defining the words I use so that there can be any real discussion I choose to nitpick and hide behind my invisible definitions
So you just came to shitpost, is that it? There's literally no way to see this as otherwise, as you are giving zero substance for the thread, even if the discussion could be easily salvaged by you not just acting like an asshat. Get out.
It's much more than just "melancholic"
Please stop making up retarded terminology.
I already have a hard time keeping up with the GZ/XK/YX whatever.
/c/ sometimes has pretty comfy threads with this theme
There is nothing invisible about the definition, it is a word known to many and thirty seconds on the internet is all it takes to enlighten yourself. You're basically trying to act like you're the victim of some kind of vicious elitism when it's only your own fault you outright refuse to accept that you used a word without knowing its meaning and ended up throwing a fit over it instead of just educating yourself.
>He's still doing it
I miss the weekly Sup Forums art threads.
Thirty seconds on google.
Gakkou Gurashi and other anime about how to go on after the world ends as life simply goes on.
I know we shouldn't discuss youtubers here but pause and select did a great video on it.
So there's this manga about a nympho girl who one day wakes up and finds herself alone in the world. Everybody is gone, she faps to sleep every night because she hates the darkness.
>Slice of Life and the end of the world
