I doubt the author will pull a 180 and ditch all that devolepment between Kazuma and Megumin, there's just no way.

In the WN, Darkness also steals Kazuma's first kiss, and he does the same to Megumin a few volumes later. But the timing of Aqua's falling in love with Kazuma is so generic that I think she's going to win. I've never wanted to be wrong more than now.

Tbh it doesn't really matter since it was a rough draft. The fact of the matter is that the web novel and light novel split after volume 5-6. However, I'll still be wary of the author's intention for the ending.

It's a very cute scene, but it doesn't say much about Kazuma's feelings towards Megumin. He gives her a large amount of manatite and tells her to use it to unleash her explosion on the Demon King's castle. Megumin asks him if this is okay, because he could buy a castle with all that manatite. He convices her that it's perfectly okay, and comforts her in the idea that she's the strongest mage. She's really grateful and is moved to tears, then she tells him that she will definitely meet his expectations. Then Kazuma says, "I'm counting on you, the strongest mage!", and Megumin clings to these words.

Kazuma is fueling her chuuni, she is now putty in his hands. Whether he'll fuck the putty, who knows.
