Hikari is the most well grounded character and noticed right away how asuka is dependent of the approval and affirmation of the others. When its implied rei could easily take her place during the dance battle, she almost has a break down, and hikari immediately sends shinji to fix it.

The last time I felt real love was when I was 15 years old.

I'm 32 now, and have had at least 4 relationships since then.

I never felt that kind of love ever again. Now it's more of a "I have grown to tolerate you" feeling with sex in between, so long as their presence isn't negative.
