I didn't know it was divided like that in the west. in our culture family is very tightly knit together and incorporates all members of your family - both nuclear and extended. having said that i agree with you that couples need to interact with other couples within the extended family. naturally it increases the strength of the group. especially since conditions are not that great within my country so having a lot of decent family members looking after each other is definitely a big plus. if it wasn't for the help of my uncle (extended family) who treats me like his son and my parents (nuclear) I wouldn't be where I am at right now.

The nuclear family and extended family are not at odds with one another. In a normal setting, there are multiple nuclear families that make up an extended family network, and they should be getting together to spend holidays together for quality time and forming bonds outside the bounds of the strict nuclear family setting.
When I was a kid, that's how it worked, my family (before they divorced) would visit and hang out with our extended family (cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc.) for big events and holidays. As I witnessed the breakdown of my own family unit, so too did the extended family become more and more estranged, until these days they're practically strangers.

Yes. This is how I structured my family - with extended family for big events and holidays but as you noted it wasn't enough interaction to maintain bonds longterm. In my case our parents are dead so there was no patriarch, no spoke in the wheel to keep us turning. Nuclear (Core) families need more regular interaction.
Also in my case, in retrospect and maybe because our parents had died, all my siblings married selfish jerks. The selfish jerks used their divide and conquer methods and we slowly became estranged.

I just checked my Sup Forums recomended reading download, and it's not in there or I'd upload it myself. I bought the book. Be forewarned though that it is a very dry read. It's a history book covering a span of time from the French Revolution to around the 1990's I believe. It looks at events and cultural figures that were instrumental in the development of the ideology of sexual revolution, and it's also tied with communism.
It's a great read but it's a big book, so be aware if you have a short attention span.
