Even though it was stupidly obvious who the big bad was, I can't think of a better one than what you posted OP. Other than the "mystery of the big bad" - everything else was very well put together, paced, and nothing felt contrived. They even had the balls to "nope" the MC.

Speaking of contrivances...

I hated Monster, I thought it was intellectually lazy. Contrivance after contrivance after contrivance. - That said I don't begrudge those who liked it.

I made it to episode 17 and dropped it. Do the contrivances let up any 156818512? I'd love to watch the show if it gets better but it seems like the same shit on a ~4 episode loop over and over.

Currently there is approximately 92 volumes (981 chapters total). The number of deaths each chapter can vary so hey let's just guesstimate an average of 1.5 people die per chapter.

That's ~1472 deaths from Conan simply just showing up to someone's house. You would think after so many deaths he would just deduce he has a split personality and is the true Boss of the Black Organization.

I think the erased manga is about perseverance and character grown but that doesn't sound too exciting on paper so it was promoted as a mystery thriller. Good anime, excellent manga.
