If he was "their" guy they would have never made the huge effort starting this time last year to get him out of the admin.
They started with the narrative that he was Trump's puppetmaster.
They ended it with doing in his candidate in Alabama making sure to drive a huge wedge between him and the President.
Bannon was likely the leaker, which did more to undermine the administration than to undermine the people he was against.
The issue was that he spoke to freely to the press and interviewers and that he could not get along with others including dissing the President's family, which is never a good idea if you're an outsider in a family business.
It's a shame too, his advice that he's given Trump including not firing Comey has been pretty sage compared to Javanka and Globalist Gary.
