Do I have to know how to play Mahjong to get this?

Do I have to know how to play Mahjong to get this?

Nope, not at all. But it gets better when you do.

Honestly, it's one of those series where if you watch the anime and actually enjoy it you are gonna probably pick up the game on your own. You don't have to understand Mahjong to have a good time, but you will have a better time if you do know Mahjong.

With that being said, Akagi has a great amount of Re-watch value and it is pretty common to just re-read chapters to try and place where in a session Akagi is playing.

I mean I can tell I'm going to like it just by the direction and dialogue, so I guess I'm off to a 3 and 1/2 hour video of a detailed runthrough of mahjong.

Thanks I guess

Do I have to be a recovering gambler to get this?

Who Hong Kong Mahjong films here?

You don't need that. The basic rules are enough. It might be worth keeping a cheat sheet of yaku (winning hands) handy and looking them up as they come up in the show so you can see what they are.

>the image doesn't actually have anything to do with mahjong skill at all

Literally the only FKMT manga that actually requires mahjong knowledge is Ten.

Do you have to be a fucking maths genius to understand most of this?

Maybe, otherwise you wouldn't have people constantly asking why Kaiji continues to gamble despite getting in the clear more than once.

You should read Saki at first.

Do I gave to be a middle-aged failure to understand this?

That's one of the cases where you'd appreciate it A LOT more if you were/

this image reminds me that I thought that Soga had a disease or something, the first time I've read Ten.

>Be Soga
>be considered almost a legend, rule over the Underworld for over ten years, god-like mahjong skills
>some punk appears out of nowhere and completely outmatches you, to the point where he's considered to be part of the realm of gods
>after many years of slowly fading into irrelevancy, finally get one good shot at proving who's the best once and for all
>despite actually doing better than him, people still don't think you're better
>by the time you can get a true 1v1 against him, his brain is so rotten he can't even play anymore

Being Soga is suffering. I wish he and Harada would get a spin-off sometimes, the dynamics of the mahjong underworld were some of the most interesting parts of Ten.

I wish we'd get more translated chapters of the Tonegawa spin-off

Saki is best enjoyed without mahjong knowledge, because it will just make you irrationally angry.

That fucking feel when

I'd probably care about it more if it wasn't just a comedy. HERO is the best FKMT spinoff so far.

>in the clear
>still in debt to teiai
>even when they're not collecting from him he still is only working shit minimum wage jobs
>not wanting to escape shitty minimum wage life

It took me three or four years after dropping out of college to work my way up to a full time salary job. I would still take most of the gambles kaiji did in a heartbeat, being a working man sucks balls.

He stops being in debt to Teiai after the Bog and after 13 steps has enough money to never work a single day in his life anymore. He just gambles because of the thrill.

after the bog and getting screwed over by the loan shark/bailing out his friends doesn't he not have anything left? It's been a while but I've only watched to the end of the animu. He does seem the type to piss away billions of dollars with gambling/being too nice if he had the money though.

Do I have to be a social outcast to understand this?

Best FKMT manga btw.

He went back to zero but the old dude lent him his house for a bit and gave him a reasonable sum of money to start over his life. He did give back the money he owed to Teiai, though, he just sacrificied any sort of bonus he could have by saving the others.

based sakazaki. but he was an old man with a family to think of. did kaiji get enough to live off of forever from him? If not I can see why he would try to gamble

Old man lent him 3 million yen to get out of his house and to stay away from his daughter

He gambles it and turns it into 400 million. After a relatively boring arc immediately after, he gambles all of it against the CEO of Teiai's son but he fucks up royally and, as of the last translated chapter I read, is about to die

That's generous but still not much money. 3 million is a year's salary (for a shitty job). Is the manga worth continuing?
