Immigrants usually move to and stay in cities, whereas whites are spread across the entire country, especially rural areas. In a rural area, $60,000 a year is comfortable middle-class or upper middle-class.
In New York City, $60,000 a year is abject poverty. These bullshit charts and graphs are always skewed by the fact that they aren't adjusted for cost of living. A fire department in rural Kansas has no reason to pay the same wages as a fire department in New York City. So whereas a firefighter lives pretty much the same lifestyle anywhere in the US, one in NYC probably makes $100,000 a year whereas the one in Kansas makes $40,000.

I don't know if this is true of US, but in the UK, one of the issues we have is the failure of the state to invest in young people. They'd rather bring in foreign labour then invest in training our own. For instance, they've effectively cut the number of training places for new nurses and made becoming a nurse more expensive despite increasing demand for them.
Until recently, they've also failed to push computer science in schools. This should have been done 20 years ago. In fact, I believe they're still teaching IT in some schools, which amounted to excel spread sheets and power point presentations when I was at school.
While the kids themselves have responsibility for choosing good degrees, the state should really push them in the right direction and incentivise people to study for these in demand jobs that the country is in need of.
Or they can ignore the young and bring in Sanjay instead.
