KyoAni original scenes were great when they were coupled with manga content, entirely original episodes like the last 2 and that awful forced fight scene in the end lower the show status from a solid 8 to a weak 7.

This is the correct answer. KyoAni segments are great to expand upon manga sections (like the "shopping school stuff for Kanna" segment). Besides, the manga felt pretty barebone in certain chapters. Like the Hot Springs and Flower Viewing Event chapters (these are not in the anime), which could easily be filled to last up to 3/4 of an entire episode with plenty of jokes.
But don't mind me, I'm a big faggot for this anime and loved all the episodes.
